Though perhaps not a total video solution, Total Video Converter does support a wealth of audio and video formats, including 3GP, PSP, AVI, MOV, and SWF. On top of that, it can rip DVDs and cut movies into smaller, more manageable fragments. In our testing, we appreciated the program's conversion speed and quality. Total Video Converter is well-suited for batch conversion. We found the interface straightforward, with one minor exception: the cumbersome Select Format dialog. Unfortunately, none of these features come for free: in addition to the 15-day restriction, the trial version stamps movies with a registration reminder. The $45.95 registration fee may make your jaw drop, too. Though it's not exactly a bargain, Total Video Converter is much more complete and competent than most of its competitors. If price is no object, it's definitely worth a look.

The never-ending mantra chanted by security suite vendors sounds a lot like "faster scans, easier to use, better performance," and AVG has released a new version that it says accomplishes all three. Certainly, the scans are faster, it does install more quickly, and some tweaks to the interface have made it easier to view. Two new core security changes will make you safer, too.
Faster and lighter land in AVG Free 2012
Installation
We found that the program can go from completed download to ready to use in about 5 minutes.
Last year, AVG cut down the number of installation screens from 13 to 5. This year, the process continues to be short, but savvy users will want to be wary of a few things. First, if you have a browser open when installing, AVG will not warn you before it forces it to close. Second, you are opted-in to AVG's Security Toolbar and the Secure Search default search engine change. Users who opt out of installing the toolbar but want it later will need to rerun the installer to get it.
On the polite side, AVG does not opt you in to an automatic AVG Internet Security trial. By starting from a null position, you are required to actively choose to install AVG Free or the 30-day trial of AVG Internet Security. So this year's install procedure is a bit of a crapshoot, better in some ways than last year, but unchanged in others.
Interface
The changes to AVG's interface in the 2011 version were minor but actually improved usability quite a bit. This year, the tweaks are even less pronounced. There's not much different besides redoing the icons in the main interface so they're easier on your eyes.

Joining the one-click Update button on the side nav is a one-click Scan Now button. There's a clean look to the nav, as well, with bigger fonts and timestamps for the most recent scan and most recent update.
AVG has placed icons for its security components in a central pane. Double-click on one to access more information and basic configuration settings for each specific tool. Advanced settings are available under Tools on the menu bar at the top of the window.
The new interface changes are small, no doubt, but they do make AVG easier to use.
Features and support
AVG 2012 includes a couple of solid changes to make you safer. The first is a patent-pending technique for identifying one of the most obnoxious threats to ever reach your computer: the fake antivirus. If you're unfamiliar, these programs purport to be an antivirus, or a Web-based antivirus scan. Once they install on your computer, the only way to get rid of the infection is to "buy" their license. They're also related to the ransomware infections, which don't even bother with the effort to pretend to be an antivirus. AVG 2012 will block both of them.
The LinkScanner tool has been improved to watch out for more dynamic code, which is essential in the security game because threats are mutating at such a rapid rate. Meanwhile, premium users get the new AVG Accelerator option, which optimizes your Internet connection to speed up downloads and rendering. It currently works on two sites: YouTube, and you can see its impact when pausing and unpausing videos; and Download.com binary downloads. The accelerator protocol was developed internally at AVG.
AVG now includes a monitoring tool that automatically warns you when Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer consumes too much memory. Called AVG Advisor and in all of the AVG suites, it opens a small pop-up and asks you if you'd like to restart your browser. There's no way to "force" it to activate, although if you open up a couple dozen tabs, wait a few minutes, and then open another dozen or so, it ought to kick in.
Changes made last year are still relevant. The software offers what it calls "smart scanning," which leverages AVG's behavioral detection network to scan known safe files once, and only rescan them if it detects changes. As with its competitors, AVG's network is made up of its user base anonymously contributing data up to the cloud. You can choose to opt out of contributing your data when you install, or from the options menu. AVG says opting out won't negatively affect your security.
The smart scanning tech also gives you a built-in system resource manager that prioritizes scans. If a scan is scheduled to begin while the computer is in use, it will automatically restrict the scan so that it runs slower but doesn't interfere with the computer's other tasks. When it detects the computer idling, it will then allocate more power to the scan. The feature comes with a slider so you can customize how sensitive it is.
The desktop gadget for Windows Vista and Windows 7 users that lets them initiate scans and updates with one click, without having to open the full interface. It also contains links to AVG's and Facebook pages, which the company uses to bolster its support for the free version.
The PC Analyzer scans your system for Registry and disk errors. It includes a disk defragmenter and a broken-shortcut cleaner, as well. Although the feature is restricted in full to paid users, if you have the free version, the PC Analyzer comes with a one-time offer to clean all errors it finds. It provides a link to download the separate PC Analyzer tool, once the scan is completed. This is an interesting twist on the idea of letting users detect but not repair errors, and it provides more functionality while not affecting the basic security of your computer. However, it's likely that some users will shy away from the extra download.
Other features are restricted to users of AVG's paid upgrades. The paid upgrade version of distinguishes itself by offering chat link shield, a download scan for files sent via instant message that looks at all ports, not just port 80, and telephone support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The PC Analyzer option mentioned earlier is also included, and comes without restrictions. New in 2012 to premium users is the new AVG Accelerator option, which optimizes your Internet connection to speed up downloads and rendering. It currently works on two sites: YouTube, and you can see its impact when pausing and unpausing videos; and Download.com binary downloads. The accelerator protocol was developed internally at AVG.

Not everyone is on Facebook, but it sure seems that way sometimes; the site certainly has more members than any other social networking site in history. Among Facebook's many options for staying connected is its chat feature, which is popular with many users. But what if you want to chat with Facebook friends without being tethered to the Facebook Web page? Try fTalk. This slick chat client lets you log into your Facebook account and chat with your friends without even having your browser open.
We got off to a rough start with fTalk, as it
immediately crashed the first time we launched it. But after we
restarted it we encountered no further problems. The program has a sleek
interface that's typical of chat clients, with separate collapsible
lists of friends who are on- and offline; a search feature lets you find
friends quickly if your lists are long. Initiating a chat with a friend
opened an attractive window that displayed both our profile images, as
well as links to open Facebook in our browser and view our friend's
profile and photos or send him a private message. Options allowed us to
enable or disable sounds and tray notifications when we got new messages
or when a friend signed into chat. We didn't come across a Help file
anywhere, but that was okay; anyone who's ever used a chat client before
(and even most people who haven't) should be able to figure out fTalk
pretty easily. Overall, we found fTalk to be a great alternative to
chatting on the Facebook Web page, and we recommend it to anyone who
makes frequent use of Facebook's chat feature.fTalk installs and uninstalls without issues.

When online chatting first became popular, most of us did it using a
chat client, such as AOL's Instant Messenger or (if we really want to
show our age) ICQ. These days, many people chat using Facebook, and why
not? The vast majority of the people you know are probably there, and
chat is integrated into Facebook's interface, which you probably have
open all the time anyway. If you miss having the option to chat without
having your browser open, however, try Facebook Chat DeskTop. This
simple program lets you access your Facebook chat buddies from your
desktop. It didn't knock our socks off, but it's a viable alternative if
you don't always want to be chained to your browser.Facebook Chat DeskTop has a basic interface that's easy to figure out. We logged in with our Facebook username and password, and the program displayed our Facebook friends in an alphabetical list; online friends were on top, and everyone else was below. The program lacks some of the features common to most chat clients; there are no sound options at all, so you can't depend on an audio alert to let you know when you've sent or received a message. We also weren't crazy about the fact that you have to click the "Send" button to send each message, although you can tab over to it and then press Enter instead of using the mouse. Overall, Facebook Chat DeskTop works, but it's a pretty bare-bones chat client. There are probably other, more sophisticated options available.

We'll get straight to the point: QTranslate is one of the best
translation tools we've encountered. It's versatile, powerful, and easy
to use. It's an excellent choice for people who read or writes in a
language other than their mother tongue.QTranslate is deceptively simple to use. The interface is separated into two panes. To translate a chunk of text, paste it into the top pane (QTranslate will automatically detect its language), select the desired translation language, and the translated text will appear in the bottom pane. Although we liked this aspect of QTranslate, the application really shines when you're using it elsewhere on your computer -- anywhere else. Reading a newspaper in a foreign language and unsure of a word? Highlight it, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Q, and a small pop-up will appear with the translation. Want to hear the word's pronunciation? Ctrl+E will play it. This works system-wide, whether you're in a Web browser, Word document, or anywhere else with text. You can even select the translation service used; options include Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, Promt, Babylon, SDL, and Yandex. The program comes with a selection of virtual keyboards, making it easy to type characters that aren't included on your real one. The program's Help file is brief, consisting primarily of a list of keyboard shortcuts, but that's OK; QTranslate is easy to figure out. Overall, we were beyond impressed with QTranslate, and we recommend it for foreign-language readers and writers of all types.

Although Windows has a clock of its own, there are plenty of clock applications that add functionality -- or just decoration -- to the task of displaying the time. LCD Clock is a simple program that's fairly light on features, but isn't a bad choice if you're looking for a simple way to view the date and time.LCD Clock annoyed us right away by forcing us to install the FunMoods toolbar, a piece of malware masquerading as a tool for adding emoticons to social networking sites and e-mail. Although it's not uncommon for software to attempt to install unrelated toolbars during the installation process, you can almost always decline and continue with the installation. When we attempted to decline FunMoods, however, we were asked if we wanted to abort the installation. So we soldiered on, knowing we'd have to spend time getting rid of FunMoods after we were done installing LCD Clock.
LCD Clock itself is a fairly basic program, but it does have a few cool features. It displays the time (including seconds) and month, date, and year in a typical LCD-style display. The numbers are black, the background is light gray, and unlike many other clock programs, there's no way to customize its appearance; it can't even be resized. What we did like about it, though, was the fact that its small handful of features could all be accessed from various points around the interface. Want to hide the clock for 10 seconds? Click on the upper-left corner. Prefer to see the day listed before the month? Click the slash between the two. The clock can also be set to start with Windows and to always be on top. There's no Help file per se, but clicking below the slash in front of the year brings up a small About screen that lists the program's features. Overall, nothing about LCD Clock particularly impressed us, but it's not a bad choice if you need an unobtrusive way to display the date and time on your desktop.
